So I just tried Dogfish Head's Pumpkin Spice Ale, which I found....well...not at all pumpkiny or spicy. It was okay, just not quite the beer-meets-pumpkin-pie experience I was hoping for. Anyone out there try any others with better results?

World's Largest Six Pack

World's Largest Six Pack is...... (drumroll)...... in LaCrosse Wisconsin, and it's LaCrosse Lager. (It used to be Old Style Light, my mom's fave). But seriously, beer drinkers, this six pack is huge. They're actually the brewing tanks for the brewery, and they are painted to look exactly like the aluminum cans of lager. This brewery also makes skank-butt Mike's Hard Lemonade and all the Smirnoff shit.
SO, because we like beer I thought I'd throw out this useless information just for fun : )

Hey there, I am a self-confessed beer-a-holic. And it's going straight to my tummy! Looking ahead to summer bikinis, tank-tops, a light-as-air dresses, I need to slim down my bod. But, I don't want to give up my beverage of choice, either.

I normally like good stiff brews- jubelale, snowcaps, seirra nevada pale, fat tire, etc.... I need some suggestions of nice full-bodied brands- that will not make me as "full bodied" too!!! (puns all intended- sorry ;o)

Thanks for the ideas!

Knew I didn't like Budweiser for a reason!

Did you know that "Budweis" is the German name for the Czech city of Ceske Budejovice... meaning, Budweiser Beer is literally "beer from Budweis" in German.

The American brewery Anheuser-Busch began using the name in 1876. The problem is that the Czechs have been brewing beer—which they called the Beer of Kings—in their town since thirsty King Premysl II Otakar (son of good King Wenceslas I) founded the city in 1245. Unfortunately for the Czechs, they only began calling their beer Budweiser Budvar in 1895 and ever since that time the two breweries have been locked in a legal battle for rights to use the name.

The new problem brewing for the US brewer now is that, according to the laws of the new European Union (EU), of which the Czech Republic became a member this past week, manufacturers may use the name of a location only if their plant is situated in that location. So far, however, after a century of legal squabbles, both sides are still brewing beer under the name "Budweiser."

Another interesting fact is that the Czech town, "Plzen," or "Pilsen" in German, has given its name to a type of beer widely called "Pils."

Those Germans... I'll stick to my microbrews for now, thanks.

Pilsners?

This is my first post on this tribe--and I'm really excited about it. After returning from the balkans last month, I've been all about the pilsner. I am tired of people in this country, or least my beer snob friends equating every pilsner with budwiser and other swill. (Which I will, on occasion, drink.) I have developed a fondness for Tuborg, Kamenskaya, and Zagorka.
Does anybody have a favorite pilsner? I've followed the discussion on favorite beer, and while I tend toward different brewing processees, right now I'm interested in pilsners.

70+ foreign brews.. my oh my what to choose..

Seriously.. when you have such a selection of different tasty beverages how do you actually make a decision? Drink a bunch through out the night, a taste here, a taste there.. stick with light beers, dark beers, mix & match?

It took me way to long to decide on a beer, everytime I spotted one I hadn't tried that looked good.. right below it and too the left was another.. then below that.. It had to have been more then a half hour before I actually decided...

Well YAY! for good brews! and the ladies that digg em!

Anyone want to "Do the 99" in Santa Cruz, California?

Hello there, folks.

I've been going through some of the archives here but couldn't resist the urge to throw my own topic out and about.

Until quite recently, I didn't realize I liked beer. Somewhere between sneaking swigs of whatever nasty crap we could get in high school and now, I had recast this noble beverage as being for drunkards and rednecks. Little wonder, I suppose, since that's the people I grew up around.

But I digress... the unfortunate end result of this misconception is that I've missed out on several years that I could have spent drinking beer!

Because I am obsessed with variety, beer is a slippery slope for me to start down... to give me some kind of direction, I've decided to "Do the 99" at my local pub.

http://www.99bottles.com/

Not only does it look like it should get blown up at the beginning of an action movie... but it has some great beer! I just don't like the idea of hanging out at a bar by myself. :-P

Anyone in my neck of the woods interested in making a gathering out of it? Though my finances are frequently tight (yay Santa Cruz rent prices), I could easily commit to once a month without breaking a sweat.

I'm also really curious about the Seabright Brewery, too.

http://www.seabrightbrewery.com/

Thanks for reading!
- D
All of the above.

Newbie here...

Well - newbie to the tribe...definitely not a newbie to beer. All of my friends call me a beer snob...and I feel honored to carry that title. I am actually going out tomorrow night to one of my fave watering holes in town - Flanigans. They have seasonal beers as well as beers from all over the world. I will check in and let you know what I had.

When I am at a "standard" bar that has limited selections, I like the following beers:
Bass Ale
Smithwicks
Sam Adams
Sierra Nevada

But I really enjoy trying microbrews. My business has me traveling all over the country. The staff I travel with know that I MUST find a microbrew while I am in town!

Thanks, Michelle, for accepting me in your tribe. I am looking forward to sharing my love of beer with other girls who *get it*

i just saw an ad in Cosmo Magazine for Budweiser's new energy beer! it's beer loaded with caffeine, ginseng, and guarana.

beer with caffeine? that's an oxymoron to me. i drink beer to chill out at the end of the day not get wired.

Mendocino County Brewery Tour, July 9-10

Monkster here...Our plan so far:
We are leaving SF the morning of Saturday the 9th of July; getting to Hopland that pm to drink at Mendocino County Brewery. Then up the road to Anderson Valley (in Boonville) and Ft. Bragg and North Coast Brewery. We can stay in a town hotel/B& B for a small sum. The inn is literally within stumbling distance of N. coast.

The next morning we will be served breakfast and make our way at a leisurely pace to a choice of Marin and Sonoma stops, incl. Lagunitas, Moylan's, Bear Republic, and Russian River. We'll decide on the details later.

We'll be getting back to SF that evening, Sunday the 10th of July.

We're asking $10 apiece to hold reservations for the group. This is non-refundable if you have to back out, but any actual trip costs will be refunded if you have to bail. I understand how that goes sometimes.

Help us plan and add details at any point.
I'm cross-posting to norcal beers, too, but feel free to invite anyone else.

Beer....Rocks!

I had a friend on a local beer geek list send me a copy of this NY Times article from today, showing that there really is a regional 'flavor' to beer, even moreso than there is with wine. He also talks about some of the chemistry of beer, which may be old news to some of us, but he also gives some fascinating history/anthropology of beer.

Check it out:
With Great Beer, It's All in the Rocks (and That Doesn't Mean Ice)
By KENNETH CHANG

DENVER - The refreshing bitterness of an English pale ale, the clean light taste of a Pilsener, the dark, almost burnt graininess of Irish stout. To Dr. Alex Maltman, these are prime illustrations of the power of geology.

Wine connoisseurs often talk of terroir - a French word expressing the notion that vineyard soils impart flavors to the finished wines. But data to back up the notion is sketchy, said Dr. Maltman, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Wales. And though whiskey distillers often make much of the water they use, there is little correlation between the taste of whiskey and the geology of where it is made, he said.

Beer and geology, on the other hand, are closely entwined, Dr. Maltman said last month at a seminar on geology and beer held at a meeting of the Geological Society of America.

For one, geologists drink lots of beer, typically ending a long day examining rocks with a trip to the nearest bar. Mayor John W. Hickenlooper of Denver, a former geologist turned pub owner, told the geologists how an earlier geology meeting in 1988 bolstered his fledgling microbrewery.

And as Dr. Maltman got up to talk, two-thirds of the audience also got up and headed for the lobby, where Denver microbreweries were handing out samples in small cups.

"I'd like to suggest this evening, to the people who remain, that in fact it is with beer that there is the most direct link between the drink and geology," Dr. Maltman said.

Beer is more than 90 percent water, and because almost all brewers use water from wells, not rivers or lakes, the different styles of beer were traditionally derived from the rocks that the breweries sat upon.

Today beer is usually thought of as an unchanging product. But much scientific research and technological effort have been put into achieving that consistency from agricultural ingredients that change from year to year and season to season.

"There's a lot of science going on about beer," said Dr. Charles Bamforth, a professor of brewing science at the University of California at Davis. "The scientific understanding of beer is better understood than that of wine. It has been studied for many, many years in considerable details in a number of locations around the world."

Beer of various varieties has been drunk for thousands of years. The Epic of Gilgamesh, a king from the third millennium B.C. who ruled a land that is part of modern Iraq, mentions beer.

In the New World, archaeologists reported finding a hall in the Andes of Peru this summer with 20 brewing vats more than 1,000 years old. The brewery could be the oldest known tangible remnant of "large-scale state-sponsored institutional brewing," said Dr. Patrick Ryan Williams, an assistant curator at the Field Museum in Chicago.

The brewery produced an Andean beer called chicha from berries of the Peruvian pepper tree. The output, several hundred gallons at a time, had to be consumed quickly, at large feasts, because chicha turned bad within a week. "They came to the beer," Dr. Williams said. "It wasn't your typical bottle-and-export kind."

Beer is, by definition, alcohol fermented from grain, and most beer today is fermented from barley that is partially germinated, or malted. Hops, a type of flower, is added to give a bitter, fruity taste to the beer.

When commercial beer making started in the 19th century in Europe, brewmasters came across a problem similar to those experienced by the Andean brewers, that the beer spoiled easily. Yet there were places that were exceptions. Burton-on-
Trent in England was one, a small town that had more than 30 breweries, producing a style of beer called pale ale or English bitter.

"Let's not forget at this time beer was not pasteurized," Dr. Maltman
said. "Burton beer, somehow, did travel well. The supposition was that it was the water, but it was some decades before it was demonstrated what was going on."

Burton-on-Trent sits on sandstone rich in minerals like gypsum from water that had percolated through the rocks long ago. The waters had a pH of 5 to 5.5, ideal for extracting sugars from malted barley steeped in warm water, an important step known as mashing.

"This is why the Burton waters were so good for brewing," Dr. Maltman said. "It turned out they had a very high mineral content, but just in the right balance to get the right acidity for good leeching, good mashing. The balance of fermentable sugars has everything to do with the flavors and the kind of beer that results. The mashing stage is crucial."

The water was also rich in sulfates, which acted as a preservative, allowing the beer to be shipped to distant locations, even India - the Burton beers were called India pale ales, or I.P.A. for short. "The I.P.A. style came about because of the geology on which Burton was sited," Dr. Maltman said.

Today, any brewer anywhere can produce India pale ales by adding minerals to - or "burtonizing" - the water to match what burbles in Burton-on-Trent naturally.

A new style of beer called lagers developed in continental Europe. While ales are brewed at room temperature, the lager is fermented at chilled temperatures. (A different strain of yeast is used, too.)

Pilsen, in what is now the Czech Republic, became a noted practitioneer of lagers, and geology again had a central role in defining the taste. The well water of Pilsen is drawn from a formation of metamorphic rocks, transformed underground by high pressure and heat so that they are almost impermeable. The
water slides through cracks, but it draws almost no minerals from the rocks. This mineral-light water enhanced the clean, light taste of the beer, which became known as Pilsener.

"It came about essentially because of the geology and the waters being derived from those metamorphic rocks," Dr. Maltman said.
The pH of the Pilsen water was still in the desired range for effective mashing of the barley.

Munich, however, does not have ideal water for beer making. It is too alkaline, drawn from aquifers that lie in calcium-carbonate-rich sand and gravel washed down from the Alps. Furthermore, German law has long forbidden brewers to tweak the water chemically.

"So they're a bit stuck," Dr. Maltman said. "Instead the brewers have a little trick. If you roast the malt a little, then phosphates are released from the barley, which increases the acidity just enough to get into the pH range. It means you get a slightly different-tasting beer. And of course it means that the beer is dark."

The waters of Dublin, sitting on 300-million-year-old limestone, are even more alkaline and require even more roasting of the barley. "What they call black malt," Dr. Maltman said. "Even then the extraction isn't that good. It means the beer has a distinct grainy flavor and it certainly means the resulting beers are very, very dark, black even." That yields the distinctive taste of Guinness and other Irish stouts.

Technology has allowed brewers to overcome the traditional limits of geology, and brewers know how to compensate for year-to-year variations in barley and hops to produce a consistent taste.

For example, brewers know that beer brewed in a short, squat vat tastes fruitier than that brewed in a tall vat because of the difference in water pressure pushing down on the yeast. Unlike wine, beer
generally tastes best when first made. Many flavor compounds in beer are unstable and fall apart into less desirable flavors over time.

The chief culprit is oxygen. "Oxygen is death to beer," said Dr. Graham G. Stewart, director of International Center for Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Oxygen reacts with fatty acids in the beer to form compounds called unsaturated aldehydes that "literally taste and smell as if you put your head in a cardboard box," Dr. Stewart said.

Modern breweries have been able to reduce oxygen to almost nothing. Refrigeration also slows the chemical reactions that produce the off tastes.

Light is also an enemy, reacting with bitter compounds in the hops to produce another undesirable compound "which really does give an intense aroma just like skunk," Dr. Bamforth said. Brown beer bottles, though not green or clear glass, block out the wavelengths of light that cause the molecules to break up.
Some brewers get around that problem by extracting the bitter compounds from hops, a process analogous to producing vanilla extract from vanilla, and modifying the compounds so that they are no longer susceptible to light.

"The chemistry is really quite complicated," Dr. Bamforth said. "What you no longer get is a skunking."
The hops extracts, he said, also produce a better beer foam.

Not that beer drinkers care about the technical details. Most, like the
geologists in the lobby drinking beer rather than listening to a lecture about drinking beer, just enjoy what is in the mug.

"It lacks the snobbiness," Dr. Maltman said. "It's more egalitarian."

Just thought I would gather everyone’s thoughts on this one. I had a locally brewed barley wine the other night off the tap and it was pretty darn good I must say.
Anyone else found one they like or one they would recommend avoiding?

Hi all,

I just moved from Portland, OR to New Haven, CT, and I'm totally dismayed by how difficult it is to find good beer in these parts! Especially after my sojourn in the promised land... Anyway, I have noticed a few regional brews around and I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for Northeast beers I should check out. I tried Magic Hat's "Humble Patience" red ale and was pleasantly surprised; what else?

Thanks!

It's that time of year when the limited release micros are a flowin for the holidays. You know those beers that are formulated specifically for things like Oktoberfest, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chaunaka , Kwanzaa and so on. So the question of the day is...

What are some of your favorite seasonal brews and how readily available are they?

I know for me one of my favorites is the Dechutes Jubelale.
Big body with a little hoppy bitterness. I prefer it on tap but I’ll drink it out of the bottle if that’s the only option. I know I can find it in my area pretty easily but that's because I live in Oregon and it's brewed in Bend, Oregon. I'd love to know if any one else enjoys this beer as much as I do. Or if they cry themselves to sleep at night when it's no longer available?

In case you needed another reason to drink beer....

An excerpt from the monthly Association of Brewers newsletter states that, especially for women, moderate alcohol consumption actually improves cognitive function!
We always knew it makes you sexier, but now here's data that shows it makes you smarter, too. :)

Beer for the brain

Can beer really make Bud wiser? Researchers at University College in London
report that moderate alcohol consumption might be associated with higher
cognitive ability, particularly for women.

The study of 4,272 men and 1,761 women found that those who had consumed from
one drink to 30 drinks in the past week scored higher on a battery of tests
designed to measure cognitive ability. The effects were stronger among women.

"Compared with abstainers, persons drinking one or two glasses of alcohol per
day had a significantly lower risk of poor cognitive function," the authors
wrote.

Subjects who drank occasionally, but not regularly, performed better than
non-drinkers, but not as well as those who had drank in the week prior to
taking the tests.

"In terms of cognitive function, we found that frequent drinking may be more
beneficial than drinking only on special occasions," the authors wrote.

I am trying to lose weight and beer is such a killer so I am limiting my intake. So many SF bars dont have liquor licenses its such a pain. Lat night I watched all the boys drinking nice beers while I had white wine and Soju (some Korean Sake like stuff). If I carry on like this I dont know what will happen to my reputation.

Just seeing who might be around/up for a trip to Solana Beach and a day tasting all the lovely brews at Pizza Port (winner of the best small brewpub in CO last year). As the eventual director of my campus pub, I'm in search of some new brews, and a trip seems in order.

Anyone nearby? Interested?

No More Ladies Nights?

I'm not completely sure what to think of this...

Ruling Means New Jersey Taverns Cannot Offer 'ladies Night' Discounts
on Drinks, Cover Charges
The Associated Press
Published: Jun 2, 2004

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The state's top civil rights official has ruled
that taverns cannot offer
discounts to women on "ladies nights," agreeing with a man who claimed
such gender-based
promotions discriminated against men.

David R. Gillespie said it was not fair for women to get into the
Coastline nightclub for free and
receive discounted drinks while men paid a $5 cover charge and full
price for drinks.

In his ruling Tuesday, J. Frank Vespa-Papaleo, director of the state
Division on Civil Rights,
rejected arguments by the nightclub that ladies nights were a
legitimate promotion. Commercial
interests do not override the "important social policy objective of
eradicating discrimination,"
he ruled.

Gov. James E. McGreevey criticized the decision, calling it
"bureaucratic nonsense."

"It is an overreaction that reflects a complete lack of common sense
and good judgment," McGreevey
said in a statement.

The governor does not have the authority directly rescind the ruling.
But he met with state
Attorney General Peter C. Harvey on Wednesday, telling him that the
civil rights division had
better things to do with its time, said Micah Rasmussen, a spokesman
for McGreevey.

A spokesman for Harvey did not immediately return calls seeking
comment.

The ruling specifically addressed the weekly ladies nights at the
Coastline in Cherry Hill, but it
carries the force of a court decision and applies statewide.
Vespa-Papaleo said state officials
would write formal rules after a public hearing.

The restaurant's attorney, Colleen Ready, did not immediately return a
telephone message left
Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Courts in other states have issued divergent opinions on such
promotions.

Judges in Pennsylvania and Iowa have said similar events are illegal,
but courts in Illinois and
Washington state have said that ladies nights are permissible because
they do not discriminate
against men but rather encourage women to attend.
