This is my first post on this tribe--and I'm really excited about it. After returning from the balkans last month, I've been all about the pilsner. I am tired of people in this country, or least my beer snob friends equating every pilsner with budwiser and other swill. (Which I will, on occasion, drink.) I have developed a fondness for Tuborg, Kamenskaya, and Zagorka.
Does anybody have a favorite pilsner? I've followed the discussion on favorite beer, and while I tend toward different brewing processees, right now I'm interested in pilsners.

Re: Pilsners?
Thu, October 27, 2005 - 6:48 PMI'm more of an ale lover, but I do enjoy a fine Pilsner Urquell every now and then...when I'm lagering about.

Re: Pilsners?
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 9:42 AMI am sure if I'd ever been to eastern Europe, I might develop a liking for Pilsners, but I have never found one available in the States that I liked well enough to order twice, including Pilsner Urquell. I am more of an ale fan.
If your friends call themselves beer snobs, they should know better than to equate all pilsners with Bud/Coors/etc...they aren't remotely made in the same manner as a traditional pils...Bud has RICE in it, for pete's sake.
Do you know of anywhere the real pilsners you list below are available in the States?

Re: Pilsners?
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 9:52 AMOh sure- tons of Pilsners, imported, are in good beer stores- Budvar the most common "good one" from Czech. You know? The ORIGINAL Bud?! Lots from Germany too... Spaten, Bitburger, Einbecker and Dinkel-Acker, all of which are widely available. Winnie mentions Tuborg, I even saw that one in the gourmet grocery in Mission. But heres my problem: My stupid ass ex loves pilsners too. Hes how I came on to them in the 1st place, when we traveled to Prague. Every time I drink it, its like I am tasting him in my mouth. The fu(ker. Who has an ex story they want to share? I'll pretend I'm drinking a beer with all my girlz who love beer, and we can swap an ex story or 2 or 10. Thanks ladies! -

Re: Pilsners?
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 10:10 AMOkay, I have tasted Czechvar and Budvar at an Oktoberfest up in Seattle, and of course Spaten and Bitburger...I didn't think these last two were technically pilsners, though.
Heh, there are plenty of things I was introduced to by my exes that I still enjoy...I like to think of them as one of the only favors they ever did for me. :)
Sounds to me like you just need to find a new beer-lovin' sweetie to enjoy beers with, and you would forget all about that ass. ;) -

Re: Pilsners?
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 1:38 PMI have tasted all the usuals like Spaten (too sweet), Bitburger (too little taste), an dDinkel-Acker (too flat). But I do enjoy Budvar and Einbecker as well as most of the other Czech pilsners. Most non-large-chain stores in the Bay Area carry these.
My ex prefers ales and lagers, so we never shared pilsners. Maybe that is why I like them now? My current beau drinks whatever is available, and since he lives in Bulgaria--we generally agree on what to drink!
